The Socio-cultural Transition

Friday,18 May 2018

On 10th May, the CEPC hosted the third session of debates to celebrate 40 years of the Constitution on the socio-cultural transition. The event was organised alongside the Real Academia de Ciencias Morales y Políticas.

During the event, contributions were made from D. Julio Iglesias de Ussel, Dña. Adela Cortina, D. Emilio Lamo de Espinosa, D. Luís Alberto de Cuenca y D. Juan Manuel Bonet. All of the speakers highlighted the various dimensions of the transition, which was as political as it was socio-cultural and ethical. According to Julio Iglesias “everything has changed in Spain since the Transition”, as it now has a completely different image to that of the 50s.

Cortina´s speech focused on the change from a “ethical monism to a moral pluralism” whereas Lamo spoke about the process of normalization of Spain, in Europe and in the world. In addition, they debated the impact of the changes to education, which were both good and bad for Luís Alberto de Cuenca. The event was brought to a close by the Director of the Instituto de Cervantes, Juan Manuel Bonet, who described the transition as “the years of the satirical press, cinema, publishers, political painting and the explosion of freedom.”
