Abstract
The French Revolution had a profound impact on the consciousness of contemporaries. Events followed each other so fast that generated a sense that time was accelerating. For some authors, this would cause a new understanding of the historical subject relations with past, present and future; a new regime of historicity. However, from the counter-interpretation of the present times we will see how we should rather speak of coexistence and adaptation of differents regimes of historicity. The revolutionary wars created an atmosphere in which the mix of hope, fear and uncertainty favored a messianic-apocalyptic tone in religious discourses. The need for security and protection reactivated a powerful symbolic imaginary that remained latent within Christian culture itself. In this context, the counterrevolutionaries tried to understand the present times through traditional cultural frameworks, having recourse to history as magistra vitae and figural interpretation as explanatory mechanisms.
