Resumen
La Ley Orgánica de Educación de 2007 ha introducido en el sistema educativo español la educación para la ciudadanía, como área o materia en la educación primaria, secundaria obligatoria y en el bachillerato. El hecho tiene antecedentes en recomendaciones del Consejo de Europa o de la Unión Europea pero ha tenido como consecuencia una amplia polémica de índole política y jurídico-constitucional. En el trabajo se defiende la constitucionalidad de la introducción de esa materia y, entre otras cosas, se aporta jurisprudencia del Tribunal Constitucional Federal alemán y del Tribunal Europeo de Derechos Humanos para afianzar esa conclusión.

Abstract
The 2007 education act brought in «citizenship education» as part of the Spanish
curriculum. It was to be taught at primary, secondary and high school levels. This subject is mentioned in recommendations from the Council of Europe and the European Union, but it has triggered a broad-ranging debate regarding its political and its legal and constitutional aspects. The article defends the constitutionality of bringing this subject on to the curriculum. It provides jurisprudence from the German federal constitucional court and the European Court of Human Rights.
