Resumen
La producción teórica sobre el progreso —en particular el normativo, moral o sociocultural— ha experimentado un reciente impulso. El artículo examina aquella parte de esta literatura que se vincula a la teoría crítica, situando en el centro de la reflexión el problema de la «trascendencia inmanente». En concreto, se identifican cuatro conceptos de progreso, cuya discusión llevará a defender la pertinencia de teorizar esta noción y de continuar el ejercicio de desagregación de la misma. Repensar el progreso requiere que se lo conciba como una forma de refinamiento funcional, cuyo estudio se oriente a nutrir y estructurar el espacio de las razones en el que los actores sociales dirimen sus controversias normativas. Como resultado de estas o de transformaciones en otros campos, emergen ocasionalmente nuevos umbrales capaces de redefinir lo (no) posible y lo (no) justificable, a la luz de los cuales posteriores desviaciones han de interpretarse como regresiones.

Abstract
The concept of progress —in particular that of moral, normative or sociocultural progress— has attracted renewed theoretical interest. This article examines that part of the debate that is linked to critical theory, thus placing the topic of «immanent transcendence» at the centre of the discussion. Four different concepts of progress are identified, the analysis of which leads to the arguments that progress should be further theorised and disaggregated. Rethinking progress requires that it be conceived as a form of functional refinement, whose study should be used to enrich and structure the space of reasons in which social actors tackle their normative controversies. As a result of the latter or of changes in other fields, new thresholds occasionally emerge which redefine what is deemed (im)possible and (un)justifiable, according to which subsequent deviations ought to be interpreted as regressions.
