Resumen
Al albur del debate político territorial, numerosos analistas han destacado la
existencia de dos tradiciones ideológicas en el Partido Socialista Obrero Español,
distinguiendo entre una más unitarista o «jacobina», y otra más federalista. La proyección
dada a la controversia responde al papel central del Partido Socialista para
articular la cuestión territorial de España, así como la dificultad de la izquierda para
resolver lo que Santos Juliá (1981: 66) denomina «conjugar el binomio sentimientos
nacionales/postulados socialistas». Se trata de averiguar si desde su origen en la
Restauración hubo un tratamiento específico sobre el tema de las nacionalidades en
el Partido Socialista español, dando lugar a una de ambas tradiciones, o bien una sucesión
de pronunciamientos coyunturales que reflejan una evolución accidentalista
del tema.

Abstract
Departing from the territorial debate, numerous analysts have emphasized the
existence if two ideological strands inside the Spanish Worker Socialist Party, distinguishing
between one more unitarist or «Jacobine» and another more federalist
tradition. The projection given to the controversy responds to the central role of the
Socialist Party in articulating the territorial question in Spain. This is why the
left-wing has difficulty in resolving that Santos Juliá calls «the trade-off between
national feeling/socialists postulates». The article asks whether from its origin in
the Restoration, the Spanish socialist party gave a specific treatment to the issue of
nationalities in Spain, generating one of both traditions, or whether there has been a
